Recently, mangosteen has become one of the most popular and esteemed tropical fruits on the health market. It is increasingly advertised and sold as a “superfruit”, and is widely used for medicinal purposes in Asia where the fruit and tree are native. Mangosteen combines an abundant supply of nutrients and antioxidants to help increase overall health.
Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree that grows from 25, to upwards of 75 feet tall. The oddly shaped fruit has a cap of calyx at the stem and is generally a dark purple. The fruit may be seedless or have oblong, flattened seeds, and is described as citrusy and peachy in flavor.
The Mangosteen fruit contains high levels of carbohydrate and dietary fiber and is rich in antioxidants. The whole fruit contains xanthone, garcinol, and mangostin. Studies allege that Mangosteen contains anti-inflammatory agents and can inhibit cyclo-oxygenase enzymes and carcinogens. Garcinol found in the fruit may also be used as an appetite suppressant to assist in controlling weight fluctuations. Mangosteen also contains the phytochemicals: Benzophenones, aristophenones, depsidones, and garcimangosone D; as well as polysaccharides, flavonoids, and terpenoids.
Although there have been numerous reports and studies on the benefits of Mangosteen, these reports, in many cases, are preliminary and/or are incomplete. Orovo recommends that you consult a physician before you begin taking any new health supplement blend.
